did they go black ops?

The fire was probably sparked by renovation work, especially that high up on the roof. But France has had enough terrorist attacks that we shouldn’t discount malicious intent.

Someone trying
to kill the hunchback again?

Probably the Huguenots. I’ve heard their sleeper cells have been laying low in Germany for a couple hundred years.

That and well over a millennia of French cultural heritage .

Mostly stone, so I imagine it’ll be fine. It’s a cool touristy spot, but as far as cathedrals go in Paris, give me Sainte- Chap elle anyday.
Last year, the Catholic Church in France launched an urgent appeal for funds to save the cathedral, which was starting to crumble.
As a Catholic, it’s a little ridiculous they’d make such a plea. The Church has such an obscene amount of money/assets , they could easily afford to rebuild Notre Dame more than a few times.

I’m not happy to see this news. I joke because I’m uncomfortable with conflict. And fire.

Wow that's no small fire.

I had the same thought when I read that, but I’m not Catholic.

o shit. thats really bad. I dont think that will buff out. I went there with my wife (girlfriend at the time) I think visiting that building changed her whole trip there.

This makes me sick. Just recently St. Sulpice had a small interior fire. It was quickly put out and no damage was done to the main organ. The Cavaillé-Coll organs contained in both buildings are extremely important to the organ world. I was planning to visit both next year. I’m hoping for the best and that no significant damages are done to the Norte Dame instrument.

So what do you do when there are spiders in your house or car if not decimate the whole city with fire?

That’s what the Lutherans want you to believe.

Damn, it looks like it started where the construction is. So maybe a random weld spark ? E ven so big part of history lost.

Reports are that the central spire has collapsed .
![]() 04/15/2019 at 14:13 |

Although that’s very unfortunate, I rest easy knowing that this isn’t the first (nor the second, nor the third, nor the fourth) time that Notre Dame was damaged and later restored to glory. I’m sure it will be reopened by the Paris Olympics at the very latest.

The whole roof is wooden, and the interior and art are all flamable. This is a massive loss :(

Just listening to the news. Apparently the roof is made out of lead. Once it gets hot it’s really hard to manage a fire like that. Shame.
![]() 04/15/2019 at 14:19 |

Must have been a huge spider.
In all seriousness though that really sucks. There’s not much left either, the spire fell and they’ll be lucky if the walls stay standing with how intense that fire looks.

Notre Dame of the Holy Fuck

We went to Mass there several years back, and renovations were in progress even then. What a disaster to see all that work and the history it was meant to preserve destroyed.
Going to Mass also brought home that this is also a parish community and that there are people and lives behind the things.

No no no

This is incredibly sad, and a huge loss. Not for the religiosity aspect of it
but because of the historical significance of the building and which ever art/artifacts may have been in there. Very curious as to the cause.

Knights of Columbus! I never trusted that guy. He couldn’t even find India, then he tried to pull a Jedi Mind Trick on us. And it worked.

Dammit, Frollo!
![]() 04/15/2019 at 15:15 |

Actually it was. Paris was basically untouched by the war. Now other european cathedrals, thats a different story.
![]() 04/15/2019 at 15:20 |
|
That’s terrible. I’m sure it will be rebuilt (as was the case with numerous other great cathedrals after WWII), but it’s still a tremendous loss. Hopefully the treasury at least had a good fire suppression system and a plan to either evacuate or fireproof the artifacts there.
![]() 04/15/2019 at 15:21 |

I thought those were the guys trying to assassinate the Prince of Malta?
It was the East India Company that couldn’t actually find India (because they were so technically advanced they could hide from the Brits) so they turned to the Rothschilds to convince the world otherwise and that’s how the Council of 12 secretly runs the world.

Some good news: all the artwork that isn’t the building survived, miraculously.
![]() 04/15/2019 at 15:48 |
|
That is not going to be easy to rebuild at all.
![]() 04/15/2019 at 15:51 |

This is really horrible to see, the only possible good news I can think of is that at least no one was hurt, and seeing that it was under renovation, it may be that many of the more sensitive artifacts had been removed and put in storage. Of course, the renovation work is also probably what caused this.

At least Sainte-Chapelle is still good:

i have almost the exact same photo
![]() 04/15/2019 at 15:58 |

Seems likely. To be frank I hope it was at least something like a welding spark and not some construction worker being careless with his cigarette.
![]() 04/15/2019 at 16:19 |

They probably moved a lot of it before renovation.

I thought it was hi t by a bomb.
04/16/2019 at 10:05 |

As part of the restoration that had just been started (an most likely sparked the fire...), they had taken detailed 3D scans of the spires, so they’ll have that at least. They’d also removed the statues surrounding the spire, so they’ve survived .
![]() 04/16/2019 at 10:11 |

It does sound like a full rebuild is the plan, instead of the Berlin style of doing a new roof and calling it good enough.
![]() 04/16/2019 at 10:15 |

The cathedral is actually owned by the French government, with a special provision allowing the church to use it in perpetuity.

Honestly did not know that!

All religious buildings that were built all or in part with public funds became government property in 1905.
